Most engineering leaders are left to figure out leadership by themselves …

… this is your map for
meaningful progress

Why take the survey?

Your personal growth and development as an engineering leader is an iterative process.

It’s a journey of mastery with peaks, troughs, plateaus and setbacks.

It’s not always clear where you are on your journey, and which direction you may explore next.

Our self-reflection survey gives you a compass and a map to help you see where you are and inspire your next steps.

This is for you if…

✓ You want insights into your capabilities as they are today

✓ You want to become a better engineering leader

✓ You want direction for your personal and professional growth

This is not for you if…

✗ You want a standardised assessment or benchmarking tool

✗ You simply want to compare yourself to others

✗ You’re unwilling to do the necessary work on yourself in order to grow

Suitable for all leaders and managers in tech

It’s all relative to your experience, so it’s suitable for all levels, such as:

✓ Tech Lead ✓ Engineering Principal ✓ Engineering Manager ✓ Head of Engineering ✓ CTO

About the Engineering Leadership Self-Reflection survey

The survey is a way to gauge where you are in your life as an engineering leader and a means of discovering what you would like to improve. This is not an ‘assessment’ or a ‘benchmarking’ tool to be used as a comparison to others. The intention is to provoke curiosity, direction, and reflection in order to make a more significant and meaningful impact as an engineering leader.

Our team brings together decades of experience, study, and reflection comprising a blend of engineering expertise, technical leadership, and a fascination with the complexity and nuance of the sociological and psychological aspects of software development.

  • Developed by John and Simon at Human-Centric Engineering who are both experienced software engineers and engineering leaders. We feel this is vital for understanding the engineering leader’s experience and perspectives.

  • The four dimensions of Human-Centric Engineering Leadership align with the Four Quadrant Model of Integral Theory, a comprehensive framework rooted in psychological development theory and complexity science. We use this Four Quadrant integral approach will to help engineering leaders assess and reflect on their own level of development while providing insights into where there are opportunities for further development. For more background see An Overview of Integral Theory

  • The survey questions for the Human-Centric Engineering Leadership Assessment are open-sourced and available on Github. Feedback and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged. See: Engineering Leadership Self-Reflection on GitHub

  • We are actively using the Engineering Leadership Self-Reflection Survey in our consultancy and coaching practices. It is a new approach and is already proving to be a powerful tool for discovering individual insights and encouraging personal growth. We hope that by making this available to all we can help engineering teams become more human-centric while gaining valuable feedback from participants.
